Sunday Funday – Conservatory

The complete craft beer bar. Central location, endless food options, long bar full of draft beer…really, is there anything else that a place needs?

Brazos Valley Millions Of Peaches

We spent a Sunday Funday out at Conservatory in downtown Houston. This fairly new bar has quickly become one of the hottest places to go for the craft beer crowd like myself. With food options like Melange Creperie (formerly one of my favorite crepe stands in the Montrose area of town), El Burro & The Bull for some great barbecue and tacos, Myth Kafe for Greek options, and Samurai Noodle for noodles and Asian fusion, you can spend an entire day at the bar without needing to go elsewhere for new options.

The location is an underground space. Now, for those of you who are claustrophobic, don’t fret. This place still gets sunlight from the entrance opening down to the staircase and into a downstairs courtyard. I found this to make the place seem very open and airy while giving it a friendly vibe.

For beer, this place has a mixture of the best local and Texas-wide craft breweries in addition to top notch brews from around the country. The three beers I enjoyed were Brazos Valley’s Millions of Peaches wit, 4th Tap Co-op’s Long Walk IPA, and Funkwerks Tropic King imperial saison. 4th Tap’s beers are nearly impossible to find in Houston, so seeing it on a beer menu was a nice treat since they are almost exclusive to Austin. Brazos Valley’s Millions of Peaches was so good, it was my beer of the week last week. Funkwerks is new to Texas from Colorado, but has quickly made itself one of the most well-received breweries in the state.

With televisions around so you can enjoy some Astros games and a music selection that pleased my 90’s taste (Frank Black’s Los Angeles was one of the songs, which took me back to 1993), this place seems like the type of place you can enjoy with friends for hours. The Digital Pour system allows you to quickly glance at the brews in addition to the paper copies for those far away from the screens. Plus, regardless of what kind of food you’re craving, you’re pretty much covered all the way around. Needless to say, this will end up being a regular place to hang out for me and my friends.
