Beer Of The Week – Texian Black Jesus

Going through the refrigerator, I decided it was time to clean up and adhere to the Drink Now philosophy by not letting some of the beers that have been sitting for a while age any longer. Excuse my excitement when I found Texian’s Black Jesus in the back just calling my name.

Over the past several years, I’ve acquired quite the taste for sour beers. Because there are only a handful of breweries in Texas that make quality sours, it’s always nice to drink one from one of the better breweries executing this style.

Texian does a brilliant job with Black Jesus. It’s a dark wild sour ale that is infused with tart cherries and fermented to dryness. One of the things I love about this is how dry it is, which allows it to finish clean. One complaint I have about other sours is the lingering tartness on the palate that can ruin a beer. This finishes so clean that it allowed me to drink a 750ml bomber quickly and easily.

It pours very dark and thisĀ beer compares very favorably to another dark sour from Texas, Blue Owl’s Professor Black. Like it’s counterpart, Black Jesus has the cherry flavor up front in the aroma. However, the difference is I don’t get as much of the chocolate taste that many others I’ve spoken to rave about. Perhaps that’s a byproduct of it being in my fridge for a couple of months. That’s okay, I enjoy the tart cherry flavor and don’t really need that chocolate finish.

Most of the bottles are hard to find by now, but if you still have one or find it in your local store, it’s definitely worth buying. This Richmond brewery continues to impress me with every offering.
