Beer Of The Week – New Braunfels PKL FKR

When I first heard of this beer, I wasn’t so sure I wanted to try it. To me, it seemed like a weird combo, but after seeing so many people have such positive reviews, I was curious enough to try it. Plus, it doesn’t hurt when the brewery is one of the most creative in the state.

New Braunfels Brewing Company’s PKL FKR (yes, it sounds exactly like you think it does) is a pickled Berliner Weisse. The Berliner Weisse style has become very popular in Texas due to the heat and it being a refreshing, low ABV, somewhat sour beer.

Honestly, I expected this beer to be incredibly tart and cause serious pucker-face, but that wasn’t the experience I got at all. Instead, it tasted like a very well-executed Berliner Weisse that had a vinegar pickle juice slight aftertaste. The brewery uses actual pickle juice that is blended into the brew after 6 weeks during re-fermentation. What’s created is a one-of-a-kind offering that is unlike anything else out in the market.

What you should expect is a lemon-lime treat that is perfect by itself or in a margarita. One of the more popular ways to drink it is as a pickle-rita with the bottle turned upside down inside of a margarita. Personally, I think it’s perfect on its own. Grab a bottle or better yet, if you find it on draft, have one or two to really understand this wonderful creation.
