Beer Of The Week – Strange Land Atholl Brose

As I referenced in my Beer Run article on Monday, I wanted to see if Strange Land Atholl Brose measured up to No Label’s Perpetual Peace. What I love about both beers is the complete difference in taste for the exact same style.

Atholl Brose is a wee heavy; one that has a drastically different taste than other wee heavies I’ve enjoyed. For instance, No Label’s Perpetual Peace had a strong vanilla and bourbon flavor that powered through the entire body. Atholl Brose has a more subtle, sweet honey flavor that is easier to drink and gives it a less boozy flavor. In fact, the single malt Scotch whiskies used for Atholl Brose are so faint, you can’t even taste the oak barrels at all. With the sweetness of the beer, it works.

We were able to get our hands on batch #4, which was bottled on November 18th. This brew is part of their Small Batch Reserve series that focuses on small batches that will have different flavors between batches and give you a personal connection with the beer. This was the second Strange Land beer we’ve had (along with the Alemannia Alt) and we’re excited to see what else is out there to try. Perhaps our next choice will be the Bishopsgate Barleywine.
