Beer Of The Week – Freetail Pinata Protest

Collaboration (noun): the action of working with somebody to produce or create something.

What happens when two San Antonio icons collide and make a beer? You get unique flavors with the Tex-Mex vibe that makes South Texas a great place.

Freetail has become the quintessential San Antonio brewery. They experiment with different flavors, styles and ingredients. Pinata Protest is a band that has been on the San Antonio scene for over 10 years and takes punk and combinesĀ a Tex-Mex flare.

What the band and the brewery share is a love of their city and the ability to connect locals to the vibrancy of San Antonio. The beer is a red wit that has a tart flavor upon first sip. With a mixture of lime juice and salt, you get theĀ taste of a traditional Mexican beer, but the addition of the ancho chiles makes it taste unlike many beers out in the market. Where the beer shines is in the caramel malt that gives it a sweet flavor to balance the tartness and saltiness.

To me, the beer tastes like a perfect Texas summer. I’m thinking some fajita lime chicken and Spanish rice would be the perfect pairing.
